Right here's my first post. what better way to start off by describing the stupidest thing i did in 2006 (and the year's not even half over..). Brace yourself for:
The stupidest thing i did in 2006!
Scientific experiments have always been flukes but never in history could there been one like this. I had preordered my chemical: Acetic Acid and it arrived in a big tin can. I never gave it a single thought until me and Ricky actually started the experiment one day.
We prepared the various chemicals and finally opened the can of Acetic acid, only to find granules and powder like substances.
After contemplating it for an entire minute...
Ricky: How come the acid is in powder form?
Me: i don't know... Acid can be in powder form meh?
Ricky and Me: hmm...
Ricky looks at the chemical information and makes a big discovery.
Ricky: See, it says "glacial". Its like ice mah, ice is liquid solid. So Glacial Acid is in powder form! Acid need water, so lets mix it with water!
I was so convinced by him that i readily agreed (forgetting Chem101: NEVER mix acid with water! Value your life!)
So we did our recalculations, and poured water into the beaker of acid powder. With abated breathes, Ricky stirred the concoction...
The solid powder floated... Silence..
Me: Urm.. Ricky ah, do u think maybe... there's something else inside the can ah?
We took a stick and poked around the powder in the can. Something hard..
Pouring some of the powder out, we found- the actual bottle of Acetic Acid. (The "powder" was in fact merely sand, to keep the bottle intact during shipping)
On that day, 2 PhD students tried to mix sand with water, thinking they were making acid. Our fellow researchers and Lab technicians did get a good laugh out of this.
My future does look quite bleak now..

The famous concoction...
